Concrete Stencils offer more versatility for adding color pattern and texture to the concrete slab at the time of pouring. Designs that are quite tough to create by hand can easily be applied with stencils available in basic designs to custom and computer designed intricate patterns. Stenciling is done by both freshly placed concrete or in existing concrete that is covered by an overlay.

#1.Applying  Stencils

Applying stencils Concrete

The area to be stenciled is first of all set up and poured in the same way as the pattern concreted area. Once the concrete is placed workers screed, float and edge the slab and place the concrete over surface when concrete is still wet and free of excessive bleed water. It is carried out by two workers. One worker hold the stencil roll while other hold the uncoiled and on the opposite side of the slab. Stencil is usually laid down the top, it is plastered to the surface using special stencil roller.

The stencil is placed and then worked one strip at a time. To ensure continuity of the pattern, similar to aligning strips of patterned wallpaper, stencils are cut and aligned in specific manner. Once the slab is covered, workers make use of a pair of scissors to trim stencil to about 1/8 inch inside the form boards. It leads to swelling of the stencil. After then, to stick down the edges, a hand float is used.

#2.Adding Color

Adding Color to Stencil

Color is added using hand broadcast color hardener. This process is carried out just after stencil application, when concrete surface has enough moisture to be absorbed by hardener.

#3.Adding Texture

Adding Texture

If you want the surface to be more balanced and slightly rough then texture roller with stone or brick stencil pattern is used. A liquid or powered antiquing release agent is applied to the surface usually before texturing. Slab need to be firm enough to accept the roller’s weight and receive the texture. Rollers are available in different textures to generate variety of decorative effects.

#4.Revealing the Results

Removing Stencil

Once the slab has been textured, remove the stencils. The last piece of stencil is removed first and so on. Once the stencil is completely clear of the surface, it is carried off to the side and disposed.

#5.Finishing Touches

The next day after the pour, release agent is swept from the slab. The slab is usually cleaned by pressure washer and crack control joints are sawed.
